Sardines at Fish Market in Male

Male is the administrative capital of the Maldives, and also the shopping capital of the Maldives. There is a lot of tax-free shopping to be done here, and if you are looking for a true Maldivian shopping experience, you should not miss the Male Fish Market. Here all the day’s catch arrives with all the local fishermen and you can see the most amazing fish, including tuna, snapper and a whole variety of shellfish, which is then purchased by the hotels, resorts, restaurants and liveaboards and shipped off around the islands. A lot of fish is also sold for export to other countries around the world. In fact, after tourism, fishing is the Maldives biggest source of income.

At the other market, you will find a lot of handicrafts to buy which can be interesting. Remember not to buy anything made from coral or turtle-shell, since it is prohibited by law and we must not encourage this illegal trade.
